With over ten kilometers of fine sandy beaches, Cervia is one of Emilia Romagna's most popular seaside holiday destinations. Before the advent of modern tourism, for many centuries the economy of Cervia was based almost entirely on the extraction of salt from the neighbouring saltpans.
Today, during the summer months, Cervia welcomes thousands of tourists from Italy, Europe and beyond, all drawn to the town by it's golden beaches, excellent cuisine and vibrant nightlife, this latter concentrated in the small fraction of Milano Marittima.
Testifying to its ancient past as City of Salt are the typical houses of the salt workers, built in the 17th century around the central square, the Salt Stores and the MUSA, Salt Museum. Here, among the various exhibits, a salt crystal weighing some 15 kilos can be admired.
Not to be missed: a trip to the Nature Reserve of the Cervia Saltpans, annexed to the Regional Park of the Po Delta. This extraordinary natural oasis, inhabited by flamingos and other protected bird species, is an ornithologist's paradise.
